Nearly 100 students participating in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program will participate in Teen Court trials at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 21, in courtroom one at the Volusia County Courthouse, 101 N. Alabama Ave., DeLand.
It’s a unique partnership between the Seventh Judicial Circuit’s Teen Court and Rotary International and an opportunity for Rotary youth from across Florida to serve in various courthouse roles, including prosecution, defense, clerks, and jurors. The trials will be overseen by judges of the Circuit and will also feature guest speakers.
Teen Court is a nationally acclaimed program aimed at diverting less serious cases from traditional juvenile court. It operates on the premise that youthful offenders will more readily accept responsibility for their actions when judged and sentenced by their peers.
The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts. Participating students are sponsored by a Rotary club and are chosen based on their grades, school leadership positions, and community service.
